Chile’s first hybrid industrial plant started to be built in the middle of the COVID-19 health crisis. This plant features a 60.9 MW solar power plant with 154,710 bifacial solar panels and a 90 MW existing wind power plant.
The Azabache solar power plant will be constructed for an estimated investment of $49 million and will be connected to the grid in early 2021. It is expected that the solar park solely produces close to 184 GWh electricity annually. The importance of the project becomes more apparent when we know that the installed solar capacity of Chile is only 492 MW. Last year another large-scale project with a 382 MW capacity, Campos del sol Solar power plant, was began to build in Chile. This project is scheduled to come online by the end of 2020. By gathering these capacities, Chile will enter as soon as to the 1GW solar capacity list.
It is noted that Enel Green Power (EGP) firm is the construction firm of the plant. EGP firm stated that construction has gotten underway to deploy the 60.9MW Azabache solar plant in the Atacama Desert, side by side with the 90MW Valle de Los Vientos wind power complex that lies nearby since it was commissioned in late 2013.
