One of the showstoppers in the integration of solar cells with Electric Vehicles (EVs), is the color of the car & solar cells. The color of solar cells is independent of the car’s color & is always black or in the optimum case are pale blue-black. Now, Fraunhofer ISE says it has invented a new way to manufacture a solar roof for vehicles that can be any color the manufacturer wants. The coloration process reduces efficiency by about 7%, but if it could help the solar car roof idea become more popular, so the trade-off is worth it.
To integrate solar cells with the car roof, they have relied on shingle interconnection technology. The monocrystalline silicon solar cells overlap each other and are electrically connected with a conductive adhesive.
The new product has a power output of about 210 watts per square meter. After testing the new solar roof over the past year in North America & Europe, Fraunhofer claims that new integrated cells could add about 10% to the range of a typical electric car.
Toyota & Hyundai, are using solar cells only on the car roofs. However “Sono Motors” has taken the idea even further with embedded solar cells in its new car called Sion. In all cases, solar cells supply a part of the energy which is needed to run the EVs, which is around 30 km for Sion if left under the sun in a day.
What is the difference between Solar EV and EV?
