New Technology & Design Will Soon Become The Solar+Storage Industry Standard

During the last decade, renewable energy has gradually allocated a significant part of the newly installed global electricity generation to itself. Initially, for its persistent reduction in the costs such as solar and wind and partially due to the continuing drop in the Li-ion battery prices. These two make them one of the main pillars of the energy supply chain worldwide.  

Among renewable developers, solar experts and installers intensely keep this right track to make it more cost-competitive than other rivals such as natural gas-fired power plants. To fulfill this goal, they are turning to direct current (DC) coupling of Solar+Storage installations.

DC coupling the PV array and the battery storage system in front-of-meter installations in utility-scale plants is a much newer, cheaper, and less general approach compared to AC coupling.

In this new configuration, a DC-DC converter is tied to the batteries and connects to the AC/DC inverter along with the PV array. This allows for a single interconnection only. In other words, instead of using two expensive multiport AC/DC inverters, they utilize a DC/DC converter and one multiport AC/DC inverter which could push the cost down. According to PV-Tech Power report, released in August 2019, the configuration also maximizes the amount of MWh of

solar-generated electricity.
