Renewables Have Overtaken Fossil Fuels in the Electricity Generation in Europe in 2020

Electricity generation from renewable sources has gained traction and has become popular since the beginning of the past decade. Solar and wind power are the leading sources of energy in the electricity generation sector, so much so that IEA estimations show that solar and wind installation will overtake natural gas in 2023 and coal power in 2024. Europe is the first continent that reached this milestone.

According to Ember and Agora Energiewende’s fifth annual report tracking Europe’s electricity transition, renewables have overtaken fossil fuels, such as coal, in 2020 as compared to 2019. Electricity generation from renewables rose to 38% of Europe’s electricity in 2020 compared to 34.6% in 2019, for the first time overtaking fossil-fired generation, which fell to 37%. Europe has reached this great milestone five years earlier than other continents in the world.
