The Role of Backsheet in the PV Module and Market Shares of Different Types of It

This is the last article on the two-article series on backsheet and materials used in manufacturing. As it was mentioned in the first part, the market shares of backsheet materials are directly proportional to module production. One of the main signs for the amount of module produced is the amount of the global PV module shipments.

According to TaiyangNews, the global shipments of the PV totalled 130 GW in 2019, and the polymeric backsheet market share was more than 110 GW. The remaining 20 GW comprised of glass backsheet which is usually used in bifacial PV modules. Polymeric Backsheets include polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) or Tedlar, double side coatings (CTC), and polyethylene (PET).

Fluoropolymer-based backsheets account for more than 70% of the market share. But in detail, PVDF with 54%, PVF or Tedlar with 15%, PET with 10%, and CTC with 6% market shares are polymeric materials that are used in the PV module production.
