According to the Blackout Tracker 2018 which is Annual Report from Eaton, a power management company, between 2010 to 2017 people who lived in Utah experienced 346 power outages. To overcome this challenge, Sonnen sees an opportunity to prove that a virtual power plant (VPP) could solve major energy problems in the United States. A VPP is made up of connected solar roofs and batteries so that renewable energy can power the entire complex if blackout happened.
Soleil Lofts, an apartment complex of 600 homes in Herriman, Utah, will be equipped with 5MW of solar PV and a total of 12.6MWh of battery energy storage, aggregated together from individual units in each apartment. The project will be completed in 2020.
When completed, the entire complex will be the largest operating VPP in the U.S, according to Rocky Mountain Power.
