Portugal is the home of the world’s first combination of the hydroelectric and solar power plant in which the solar plant produces enough energy to power the equivalent of 100 homes for an entire year. The floating solar power plant (FSPP) that has been installed on the Alto Rabagão dam in Montalegre completed in 2017, with results exceeding expectations.
The plant which including 840 solar panels has installed capacity of approximately 220 kW. It has occupied an area of 2500 square meters. Its generated electricity is 5% (15 MWh) more than the estimated annual output, 285 MWh. This technology, which is pioneering in Europe, proved itself more efficient than land-based solutions.
The multi-functional installation is a demonstration of how new clean energy technologies can transform and enhance existing ones; the FSPP store sunlight during the day, whilst the hydroelectric energy can be generated at night and during peak hours.
The Alto Rabagão dam annually generates 85 GWh and the reservoir of the dam has a surface area of 22.12 square kilometers.
