The industry is the largest user of energy worldwide—and the vast majority of industrial energy use, 74%, is consumed in the form of heat, not electricity. When you think of solar, you probably think of the panels on top of suburban roofs. These photovoltaic (PV) arrays absorb the sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. However, there is another solar technology that is more direct and powerful: Concentrated Solar Power (CSP).
According to GlassPoint news, by harnessing sunshine to produce steam, instead of burning natural gas or other fossil fuels, GlassPoint is helping industry leaders reduce production costs while eliminating carbon emissions throughout the value chain. GlassPoint designed its enclosed trough technology to overcome the operating challenges found in remote industrial locations and to deliver the lowest-cost steam.
GlassPoint and Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) have completed four blocks of the Miraah solar plant safely on time and on budget. The four blocks of the Miraah solar plant have a total capacity of over 100 MWt with steam production ramping up to 660 tonnes of steam per day. When complete, Miraah will be one of the largest solar energy plants in history. It will consist of 36 blocks, delivering more than one-gigawatt of peak thermal energy. PDO is the largest oil producer in Oman and a joint venture between the government, Shell, Total and Partex. Miraah will use concentrated sunlight to generate 6,000 tons of solar steam each day. ——-***——–
